When you ever make syrup, do you add sugar or honey to it? Though both will add sweetness to your syrup but the health benefits of both are definitely different. Honey is a solid source of carbohydrates. Honey is made up of fructose and glucose. Sugar is also made of these two. But still there are some characteristics inside honey that separate it from sugar. For example, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants are also found inside honey. But is it scientifically correct to consume honey instead of sugar? What is the difference between honey and sugar?

Honey and sugar are both carbohydrates. Both consist of fructose and glucose. A 100 gram sugar has 99.1 grams sugar while a 100 gram honey contains 82.3 grams sugar. Talking about calories, 80 calories is available in one teaspoon of sugar while 64 calories in one teaspoon of honey. While some amount of vitamin B is found in honey, sugar does not get any nutrients or vitamins. These figures make it clear that honey is somewhat better in honey and sugar, but can diabetics use it?

What do different studies say?

A study conducted in 2004 revealed some things. The researchers formed two groups in which some people were normal and some diabetes type-2 patients. One group was given 75 grams of honey solution and the other one was given sugar. The blood sugar and insulin levels of the honey-consuming group increased over the next 30 minutes. However, only the blood sugar level of the sugar consumption group increased. When both groups were re-examined after two hours, the blood sugar level of the honey group was normal. Researchers told that honey also increases the level of insulin, hence the level of blood sugar becomes equal.

Another 8-week research revealed that the intake of honey increases the amount of hemoglobin A1c in the body. This element increases the level of blood sugar. Because of this, the researchers said in their report that honey should be used only in a certain amount or else it will increase blood sugar.

What was the conclusion?

Honey has many health benefits. If honey is compared to sugar, it increases the amount of insulin in the body and reduces blood sugar. But the research done for how beneficial it is for diabetic patients is still less. If you use honey instead of normal sugar then it is more beneficial but only in right quantity. Do not use honey without diabetes and doctor consultation.
